History of Aviation
        Powered flight was born in Georgia in 1907. Bicycle shop owner, Ben Epps flew his aircraft across a cow pasture near Athens attaining an altitude of fifty feet and flew 100 yards crash landing but escaping without injury. Epps continued building and testing his aeroplanes through the end of WW-I.
        The Postmaster of Atlanta GA established a postal sub-station known as the Speedway Aerial Substation. Aviators from the Curtiss Flying School participated in this aviation meet (November 16-18, 1911) alternating carrying mail on one or more days of the meet. They flew from the Speedway site about three miles to Stewart Avenue where they dropped the mail from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and driven by car to the post office.
        The Postmaster of Savannah GA established a postal sub-station known as the Athletic Park Aerial Substation. Aviator Beckwith Havens flew on November 25th and 28, 1911 from the Athletic Park about a mile to Walters Road where he dropped the mail from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and driven by car to the post office.
        The Postmaster of Columbus GA established a postal sub-station known as the Driving Park Aerial Substation (December 12th and 13, 1911). Aviators Charles F Walsh and M Godet flew from the Driving Park about two miles where the mail was dropped from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and driven by car to the post office. The event was sponsored by the local newspaper, The Columbus Ledger.
        The Postmaster of Albany GA established a postal sub-station at the Albany Fair Grounds. Aviator Thornwell H Andrews flew a Curtiss Pusher on December 28, 1911 from the Fair Grounds about ten miles where the mail was dropped from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and driven by car to the post office. On his return to the Fair Grounds, Andrews crashed, breaking his arm and demolishing his aircraft.
        Postmaster Bussey of Cuthbert GA established a postal sub-station at the Randolph County Fair Grounds (November 1st and 2, 1912) Cuthbert GA. Aviator Fred DeKor (aka Fred Korstad) flew from the fair grounds about two miles to a point close to the Cuthbert post office where the mail pouch was dropped from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and brought to the post office by automobile.
