History of Aviation
On October 29, 1909 Army Captain Ralph Van Deman’s wife Sarah left Delaware traveling to College Park MD to watch aviator Wilbur Wright make a flight. At the College Park airfield she was invited by Wilbur to ride as a passenger. Her shirt was gathered around her ankles with twine and she flew into aviation history books. Sarah from Delaware became the first woman to fly as a passenger from American soil staying in the air for four minutes reaching an altitude of 60 feet. After this historic flight, Sarah exclaimed as she stepped off the aeroplane, "Now I know why birds sing."
In 1910 Robie Seidelinger was able to fly his Delaplane (Delaware built) aeroplane a few feet off the ground making it the first heavier-than-air flight in Delaware. A Felix du Pont and John Rascob founded an aviation school in Delaware in 1914 to train pilots for the Army Air Service needs in WW-I. Pilot instruction was tuition free provided the pilots committed to enrollment in the Air Service.
