History of Aviation
        Alabama's aviation history dates back to the Wright Brothers. In 1910 Orville Wright opened the nation's first civilian flying school in Montgomery on a former cotton plantation. It later became Maxwell Air Force Base..
        The Postmaster of Birmingham AL established a postal sub-station at the Alabama State Fair Grounds Birmingham AL. On October 7, 1912 aviator Joseph Stevenson planned to fly from the fair grounds about four miles to a point close to the Main Post Office in Birmingham where the mail pouch would be dropped from the plane. Sadly, Stevenson lost control of his aircraft at a low altitude and crashed. He died the nexy day ending the aerial exhibition. Mail that was submitted for the first day's flight was hand delivered to the post office unflown.
        On November 3, 1914 the Postmaster of Troy authorized the aerial transport of mail from the Pike County Fair. Aviator Katherine Stinson flew from the Fair Grounds about fifteen miles to a spot near the Troy Post Office where she dropped the mail from the plane. The mail was then retrieved and taken to the post office.
        Airplane stunt man Glenn Messer came to Birmingham to open an airfield in the 1920s and started his Messer Flying Circus soon afterwards. It featured Messer walking from one flying airplane to another and hanging from a trapeze by his teeth while dangling in mid-flight.
        In 1935 Alabama created an Aeronautics Commission. Ten years later in 1945, this Commission was enlarged and changed to the Alabama Department of Aeronautics. This Department was given general supervision over all phases of aeronautics within the State of Alabama. In May 2000 the Department merged with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
