Background: The Air Mail Act of 1925 (Kelly Act) authorized the postmaster general to contract for domestic airmail service with commercial air carriers. It also set airmail rates and the level of cash subsidies to be paid to companies that carried the mail. By transferring airmail operations to private companies, the government effectively would help create the commercial aviation industry. Various routes were designated and contracts for carrying the mail over these routes were then awarded to many different private air service companies. The Contract Air Mail routes became known as CAM's.

AM-111: AM-111 was awarded to New York Area Helicopter Service. New York Area Helicopter Service was founded in 1949 as a mail and cargo carrier. It would provide an air-link between New York City's three main airports, Idlewild (now JFK), La Guardia and Newark. Modified Sikorsky S-55 military helicopters would fly scheduled flights in both a clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation between airports. AM-111 was awarded to New York Area and on October 15, 1952 it began its NYC intra airport dispatches.

Shortly thereafter on December 11, 1952 the first suburban helicopter air service was extended from LaGuardia Airport to various points in Westchester County and southern Connecticut.

Its name was changed to New York Airways and on July 9, 1953 passenger operations were inaugurated making New York Airways, the first scheduled helicopter carrier in the US and the first passenger helicopter carrier in the world. (Note: The first passenger operations utilized the Boeing Vertol 107 Turbocopter, a civilian version of the CH-46 Sea Knight. Later it operated the Sikorsky S-61 and Boeing Vertol V-44)
