Background: The Air Mail Act of 1925 (Kelly Act) authorized the postmaster general to contract for domestic airmail service with commercial air carriers. It also set airmail rates and the level of cash subsidies to be paid to companies that carried the mail. By transferring airmail operations to private companies, the government effectively would help create the commercial aviation industry. Various routes were designated and contracts for carrying the mail over these routes were then awarded to many different private air service companies. The Contract Air Mail routes became known as CAM's.

AM-87: AM-87 was awarded to Piedmont Aviation. Thomas H. Davis founded Piedmont Aviation. It was incorporated on July 2, 1940 in Winston-Salem NC as an aircraft sales and service organization. It formed an airline division on January 1, 1948. Shortly thereafter AM-87 was awarded to Piedmont Airlines and on February 20, 1948 Piedmont inaugurated flight service between Wilmington NC and Cincinnati OH. It made intermediate stops in Aberdeen, Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Charlotte and Asheville NC, Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City TN and Lexington, KY. (Note: Piedmont grew from the smallest of 17 local and trunk airlines to become the 6th largest airline in the US in terms of passengers carried, flying over 200 jet aircraft from Los Angeles to London. Piedmont expanded its route system and profitability only to become a candidate for a potential buyout. In August 1989 Piedmont Airlines was absorbed by USAir.)
