Early-on, people corresponded with each other by sending letters which were carried over surface and sea routes. The airplane was a logical vehicle to shorten the time for sending a letter between sendor and sendee.

        The first official mail carried on an airplane occurred in India on February 18, 1911 when French pilot, Henri Picquet flew mail between Allahabad and Naini, India. Surface/sea mail now had a speedier competitor, air mail.
        The world's first postage stamp to depict an airplane was issued in the United States on July 1, 1913.
        The world’s first airmail stamp was issued by the United States on May 13, 1918 depicting a Curtiss Jenny mail carrying aircraft.
        For a letter to be sent faster via the air, special airmail or regular postage stamps could be applied to the face of the letter. This increased postage would distinguish a letter to be carried by air in lieu of surface/sea transport. Senders would often add written words to the face of a letter to help postal clerks distinguish mail that was to be sent by air mail. This was followed by the use of distinctive envelopes and by affixing non-denominated labels on the face of the envelope in addition to postage stamps. These air mail sticker labels became known as etiquettes (French for label).
