Arthur Harjula taught me to fly. He took me from my two-dimensional world to the third-dimension giving me stick & rudder wings. He taught me to be at-one with the plane. Flying became an extension of myself. Arthur took me from inexperience to confidence. He tested my judgement and honed my reactions to handle any emergency or crisis. As we flew, he would pull-back the throttle unexpectedly and crafted my reaction to take immediate corrective actions. "Pick an emergency landing place, make a decision and stick with it" he'd say. He taught me that it is always better to be safe than sorry. Piloting a plane became an instinctive function for me. He taught me valuable life-lessons. I soloed on August 30, 1962 and went on to get my private ticket.
Getting my ticket was not the end of my story, it was the beginning of a new life, a life full of confidence. Yes, if I could fly, I could do anything I set out to do. So now, many years later and well after Arthur has gone-west, I wish to give tribute to my flight instructor, Arthur Harjula. Thanks Arthur!
