Aden Airways: In January 1948 BOAC established its No 5 Line with operations centered in Aden supported by a maintenance facility in Asmara Eritrea. This helped BOAC with its links around the Red Sea and provided feeder services for its main routes in Nairobi and Cairo. On March 7, 1949 Aden Airways Ltd was formed flying DC-3 Dakotas taking over some of BOAC's local routing. Later that year on October 1, 1949 Aden Airways commenced operations as a wholly owned subsidiary of BOAC. Much of Aden Airways revenue was derived from pilgrimage traffic to Jeddah Saudi Arabia.

Ethiopian Air Lines: In 1945 Ethiopian Emperor, Hailesilassie contracted Trans World Airlines to set up and manage a country airline. Initially, EAL bought five US Government war surplus Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft (the military version of the commercial DC-3). Expatriates constituted half of Ethiopian Airlines employees.
      The first planes were not comfortable for passengers as all had seats along the length of the fuselage with cargo stored in the central aisle. To increase passenger comfort, EAL bought three more Skytrains in 1947 that had 21 forward facing seats. Toward the end of 1950's EAL bought three higher performance Convair 240 aircraft which had a fully furnished interior and 36 seats. The aircraft had pressurized cabin and cruised at high altitude through smoother air.
