Background: The Airline Deregulation Act took effect of December 1, 1978. The main purpose of the Act was to remove government control from commercial aviation and expose the passenger airline industry to market forces. This Act changed the face of civil aviation in the US. Air Mail would continue to be carried by Air Carriers but the old system of CAM and FAM routes would evolve into Air Mail flown by individual US airlines to both domestic and foreign destinations.

Texas International Airlines was known from 1944 to 1947 as Aviation Enterprises and until 1969 as Trans-Texas Airways. It was derisively called "Tree Top Airlines" and "Tinker Toy Airlines" by its competitors. Operating out of hubs at Dallas and Houston, it provided regional passenger service in Texas and surrounding states.

        During the mid-1970s, in response to intense competition from Southwest Airlines, Texas International successfully petitioned the Civil Aeronautics Board to receive discounted fares on its routes. These fares became a staple of the airline, known as "Peanuts Fares." Following the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act the airline expanded its routes throughout much of the central and southern US.

        On March 31, 1982 Frank Lorenzo was elected Chairman of the Board for Continental Air Lines in addition to being President of Texas Air Corporation, parent of Texas International Airlines. The commonly controlled carriers continued to operate separately but in close harmony with each other. Then on October 27, 1982 Texas International Airlines was merged with Continental becoming a subsidiary of Continental Airlines Corporation.
