Background: The Airline Deregulation Act took effect of December 1, 1978. The main purpose of the Act was to remove government control from commercial aviation and expose the passenger airline industry to market forces. This Act changed the face of civil aviation in the US. Air Mail would continue to be carried by Air Carriers but the old system of CAM and FAM routes would evolve into Air Mail flown by individual US airlines to both domestic and foreign destinations.

Republic Airlines was formed on July 1, 1979 by the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways. In 1980 following its buyout of Hughes Airwest, Republic became the largest airline in the US by destinations served. Republic operated hubs in Minneapolis-St.Paul MN, Detroit MI and Memphis TN.

        On January 23, 1986 Northwest Airlines (flying under the name, Northwest Orient) announced that it would purchase Republic for $884 million. The merger was completed on October 1, 1986.
