Background: Carrying personal mail by state-of-the-art aircraft flown by audacious pilots linked US cities together. At each city the link between the ground and the air was its airport. The aerodacious significance of air mail and the development of the postal service allowed man's foremost desire to get his written message delivered quickly to the outposts of the US. Progress in transportation was driven by the influence of the mail. Planes and pilots became airlines and air mail became the greatest contribution to commercial aeronautics. The expansion and development of airports became an intergal link in the advancement of aviation.

In most cases the dedication and formal opening of an airport became synonomous. The enthusiasms of the people made the dedications of airports noteworthy festive events. What better way to commemorate the dedication of an airport than by issuing commemorative air mail covers with personalized cachets on the day of the airport dedication. Occasionally, some airport dedications occurred on the same day that an inaugural flight of an air mail route was taking place.
